The theatre villa “NIVRITA PURNIMA’ has grown up in the green lap of Santiniketan where everyday life capers in joy inthe inseparably brisk dalliance of nature.
Dedicated to the memory of theatre actress Purnima Banerjee , this village nurtures an alternative infrastructure /space of open theatre .It holds an exquisite rotunda, “NATYASALA’ for intimate theatrical performance. Here different theatre groups across West Bengal present their performance(s).
The theatre village ‘NIVRITA PURNIMA’ is situated at the shadowy end of the tribal village of Ballavdanga. The village opened up a new vista of urban cultural osmosis with the unalloyed tribal kultur. With an unparalled synthesis of the folk and the refined class/aristocracy/ elegance, there has emeged the own band ‘SIRING RAHA’(meaning the music of song ) ourt of the alchemical mix of tribal-and-bengali language.
The heart of ‘NIVRITA PURNIMA’ harbours a wide wide stretch of greenery- an exclusive arena for theatrical exercise along with other creatice arts. This desired theatre-shrine offers a cafeteria ‘ NATYAPAN’ to entertain the art connoisseur- a homely enterprise for breakfast-tiffin.
A dormitory ‘ GAYAN DIHA’ meaning NATYABAS( theatre abode) is in the making to house the creative souls. An arresting tent ‘RANGBAHAR’ also to come up soon.
We call our campus ‘NIVRITA PURNIMA’ (নিà¦à§ƒà¦¤ পূরà§à¦£à¦¿à¦®à¦¾). The word “NIVRITA’ means quiet and ‘PURNIMA’- full moon. Basically the campus of our theatre villa is lonely with gentle breeze and the moon shine bright in the velvety azure sky. This is far away from city crowd amidst the attractive stretch of countryside having beautiful garden and adjacent to lovely tribal village. This is, indeed, a suitable place for meditation and intensive concentration for theatre preparation. The campus is situated in KHOAI of Santiniketan, a famous place with lovely landscape of red soil and meadows of lush green paddy fields. We consider ourselves fortunate enough that our theatre villa is located in such a place which is closely related with the name of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore as his dreamland Santiniketan is not far away from it. The place now attracts thousands of people each year being the land of Tagore and a centre for study in the University called Viswa-Bharati. The group AMRA SABUJ has totally been impressed by Tagore’s thought on Palli Siksha. Rabindranath Tagore was one of the most eminent thinkers who thought seriously about the relationship between education and development of soul. Indeed, he played a pioneering role in this respect. Rabindranath theorized education relating it to humanistic and wholesome development. He did not consider education only as a means of acquiring knowledge; rather he related education with social and cultural aspects.
The main axis of our activity is resolute by Tagore’s thought, as-
“The teachers, students and people of the surrounding countryside will be related to each other with the strong and intimate ties of livelihood. They shall co-operate to produce all the necessities of their own existence. "
- Rabindranath Tagore
